Wednesday evening, June 4th, eight Girl Scouts from Troop #354 received their silver award at a ceremony held at the Hawthorne Center in Columbia, Maryland. The silver award was as a result of their successful partnership with Rebuilding Together Howard County. The girls worked to provide free home repairs to a group home located in Columbia.
The girl scouts picked this project to give back to the community and revitalize the neighborhood by providing home repairs to those in need.
Rebuilding Together Howard County provides free home repairs to low income homeowners. Towards that end, 27 homes were repaired on April 26th, 2014. Girl Scout Troop #354 was one of several Rebuilding Together sponsors to include big names like Hamel Builders, Harkins Builders, Honeywell, and several local businesses and churches. Although, the Girl Scout troop was the youngest volunteer team by far, they exhibited outstanding organization and leadership skills to accomplish their goal. They spent the day painting the interior of the home. According to Pat Williams, Troop Leader, “The girls were very excited to take on this huge project and give back to the community”.
Applications to Rebuilding Together Howard County are accepted year round. The application is available on the web site www.rebuildingtogetherhowardcounty.org.
